It all began with a gentle breeze of American nostalgia and a touch of patriotism: the American Dream of SOG founder Spencer Frazer was realized in 1986 in an almost stereotypical way – within his own four walls. A passionate tinkerer, the trained scientist and mathematician had acquired in-depth knowledge of various materials, design, and construction throughout his professional life.
The spectrum of his product developments ranged from simple children's toys to highly technical equipment for the aerospace industry. A constant drive for improvement was the driving force behind his designs. His fascination with knives was ignited during his time as a Boy Scout, as he was impressed by the versatility of these small tools. One day, Spencer Frazer was captivated when a particular knife caught his eye quite by chance: the tactical knife of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observation Group (MACVSOG), a special forces unit used primarily for covert operations in the Vietnam War. The manufacturing quality, the design, and the diverse tactical applications prompted the founder to reissue this Bowie knife as a tribute to the US military's special forces unit. With this idea, the manufacturer SOG (Studies and Observation Group) was born. Their mission was confidently stated: to design knives of uncompromising quality and reliability that would meet the rigorous demands of risky military and police operations. In addition to professional groups, the manufacturer is increasingly focusing on end consumers and outdoor adventurers. The Lynnwood, Washington-based company's product range now includes not only tactical knives but also hunting and outdoor knives, sporting knives, work knives, EDC knives, axes, backpacks, and the extremely popular POWER multitools.
Since 2014, SOG has been a valued partner of Böker, bringing the diverse product portfolio of this long-established Solingen company to its customers. Today, SOG is considered one of the pioneering leaders in the modern world of knives. The high level of innovation in its products is reflected in numerous awards and accolades. SOG was the first manufacturer ever to launch a multitool with an automatic opening mechanism. Spencer Frazer describes the company's high standards for its products as follows: "We don't settle for the ordinary. We never have, and we never will." Functionality, innovative design, and intuitive operation define the spirit of SOG...always accompanied by a touch of nostalgia.
