Description
Description
For anyone who occasionally struggles with long cables, relief is at hand — at least when it comes to precise cutting and stripping.
It may come as a surprise: During World War I, the Imperial Army, and during World War II, the Wehrmacht, did not issue an official standard-issue pocket knife. Instead, the Wehrmacht used a folding cable knife, primarily designed for cutting and stripping cables. This tool was indispensable for pioneers, signal units, mechanists of motorized divisions, the Kriegsmarine, and the Luftwaffe.
The cable knife proved to be simple, durable, and versatile, reliably fulfilling the many routine and often unspectacular tasks of a soldier’s daily life. This practical construction was retained even after the war, and the Bundeswehr cable knife is still produced in its original form in accordance with technical specifications TL 5110-0011, as well as under the NATO supply number 5110-12-120-0816.
Meanwhile, the cable knife has been available on the civilian market for decades, where it became a favorite tool among electricians and DIY enthusiasts. Often, it was the only knife in grandpa or dad's workshop, becoming their first whittling knife. The civilian and military versions differ only in one small but significant detail: the military version features a V-notch that makes stripping wires more precise and faster.
The Cable Knife perfectly matches the TL 5110-0011 specifications and the historical original in all details and dimensions. It features a solid Slipjoint construction, robust hardwood scales, and the characteristic four grooves on the stainless steel liners. For enhanced everyday usability, the blade material has been upgraded to modern 440A stainless steel.
Bushcraft & Outdoor Tip:
The deeply concave edge is perfect for striking sparks with Pyrophoric-Cer fire steel, making this historical cable knife an ideal tool for bushcraft applications.
