Interview with Dirk Hofmeister | Midgard's Knife

Interview mit Dirk Hofmeister | Midgards Messer
In the record time of just six years, Dirk Hofmeister has become a firmly established name among both knife designers and prolific semi-custom knifemakers—a goal that many knifemakers, despite their hard work and dedication, never achieve. The unmistakable hallmark of his knives is their angular design with immense material thicknesses, manufactured using state-of-the-art techniques. The evocative names from Norse mythology are entirely fitting. Dirk Hofmeister reveals how he keeps his inner engine of ideas running and why his company and his knives bear names from Norse mythology.
Dirk, what lengths did the scouts from the Norse god world of Asgard have to go to in order to track down an excellent bladesmith like yourself?
(Laughs): You did indeed have to embark on a long journey, which led to Hilzingen/Binningen near Lake Constance. However, I grew up in the tranquil village of Tabarz in the beautiful Thuringian Forest.
When did your enthusiasm for knives begin?
Even as a child of nine, I started collecting knives. I could always borrow kitchen knives from my mother; since we ran a restaurant and had plenty of knives, I hung one or two on the wall as decoration. Around the age of twelve, I tried making knives myself. A scar on my finger still reminds me of that. I continued to collect knives avidly until I was 47. I would even go so far as to say that I owned one of the largest knife collections in Baden-Württemberg, with approximately 1,000 knives.
Do you still remember your first knife?
The first knife was actually the one I stole from my mother's kitchen.
Collecting knives is definitely a great passion. But that probably wasn't the end of the line for you, are we right?
Exactly, at 47, the idea of making my own knives took root. Although I'd owned many knives in my life, I wasn't completely satisfied with any of them, so I sold my entire collection and started building and designing knives as a side business. My penchant for perfection awakened in me the hunt for the perfect knife. The first knife was the "Böker Plus URD." This was conceived as a knife with interchangeable handles that could be personalized using 3D printing.
A step that must have taken a lot of courage! What happened next?
In March 2017, I founded my own company, "Midgards-Messer," and have been working as a knifemaker ever since. In mid-2018, I finally became self-employed as a knifemaker and designer, leaving my previous job. We currently employ 12 people who actively support us in our work.
What was your professional career like before you became self-employed as a knifemaker?
I completed a three-year training program as a security officer abroad. This was followed by a four-year apprenticeship in merchandise management. In 2018, I finally became self-employed. Most recently, in December 2022, we opened a branch in the USA with two employees.
Your knives combine striking design, high functionality, and outstanding quality. Tell us more about your recipe for success.
Through years of collecting knives, I've handled countless models and developed a keen sense of what works and what doesn't. To date, we've developed 220 models, complete with matching handles and sheaths using 3D printing. We're increasingly being approached by other companies for help with design questions and challenges. Approximately 10% of our ideas originate from our own Facebook group, where, under the heading "Knives by Freaks for Freaks," we implement several ideas from our ever-growing community. Our YouTube and Instagram channels also contribute significantly. We place particular emphasis on transparency, ensuring we collaborate openly with our followers and keep them informed about our progress and challenges at all times.
Looking at Midgard's knife range, it's clear you're primarily targeting tactically skilled and outdoor-enthusiastic customers. How do you meet their needs?
In the tactical field, my training in the security service provided me with extensive experience abroad. I therefore know how tactical knives function and how best to use them. The rest stems from my experience as a knifemaker since 2017.
Is it also possible to have a custom-made knife manufactured?
Making custom knives is our daily business. Of course, you can also book a knife-making course with us.
What makes a knife a Midgard knife?
We offer our customers and retailers particularly robust, powerful knives with primarily thick blades. All our knives bear names from Norse mythology. This idea originally came from my daughter, who was writing a novel about Norse mythology at the time. We enjoy drawing inspiration from historical models and then creating modern versions of them. Finally, it's worth noting that Midgards-Messer is the only company we know of worldwide that combines handmade knives with 3D printing for handles and sheaths. This applies to all our models.
