Böker Damascus Annual Knife 1982

Böker Damast Jahresmesser 1982

Meanwhile, the Model 1000 was on the market as a flat folding knife with a drop-point blade. Without a doubt, this became our Damascus model in 1982. As with all the knives discussed here, Sachse supplied the wild Damascus steel with 300 layers, meaning it was folded five times. The initial billet has 11 layers of two different steels. The oval plaque in the handle shows how the blacksmith, in a vise, binds the billet with heat-resistant wire before it is heated to a glow in the forge for the first time. We had to spend a considerable amount of time sorting through the largest shinbones from several tens of tons of shipments from Brazil before we could cut sufficiently wide scales for this model. The problem wasn't so much the width of the scales, but rather their curved shape. Staining the white bone green is more difficult than one might think. The green color, in particular, is very delicate. First, the recipe must be followed precisely. Even so, a different shade of green always emerges during subsequent polishing, depending on the bone density and the batch. We pre-polished each bowl to select color-matched pairs before assembly. We produced 600 pieces for the first time. The price was DM 320.
