According to the astute observations of the average – and invariably likeable – Saarlander, the viewpoint " La Clœf " offers the best view of the Saar Loop, arguably the most famous landmark of Germany's smallest state. The picturesque Saar River, winding its way through rocky gorges, is not only a natural masterpiece but has also repeatedly served as a meeting place for prominent national and international political figures. Saarland boasts a turbulent political past, heavily influenced by French culture. Visitors to Saarland encounter an intriguing blend of joie de vivre and Saarland charm, and are especially rewarded with culinary delights: Coq au Vin meets Dibbelabbes – because Saarlanders " eat what others couldn't even speak."
Guido Ballardini from St. Wendel enriches this cultural diversity with a touch of Italian passion and a healthy dose of shrewdness. This shrewdness is cultivated, quite literally, in his long-established family business, Ballardini Steelware & Sharpening Service. The history of the sharpening business stretches back to the second half of the 19th century, when his great-grandfather emigrated from Italy to Brighton, England, and opened a shop that included a sharpening workshop. At the beginning of the 20th century, his grandfather and his family returned to Italy before settling in St. Wendel in the Saarland region in the 1930s, where Guido Ballardini has been running the business in Germany since 1996, representing the third generation. Besides sharpening knives, the company focuses particularly on providing tailored advice and selling cutlery. His passion for knives is deeply ingrained in his DNA, which is why, after studying mechanical engineering and subsequently working in development for an automotive manufacturer, he ultimately returned to his family roots in the knife industry.
Occasionally, he reminisces and will never forget the moment when, at the age of five, he received his first knife as a gift from his father. His father had already established a good relationship with Böker, which over the years has solidified into a trusting business partnership. The service is excellent, and Guido Ballardini always looks forward to the refreshing visits from the Böker representative.
The Böker Plus Exskelibur II Cocobolo also brings a breath of fresh air to the product range. "This folder impresses with its precise workmanship, high-quality materials, light weight, and, last but not least, its beautiful wide blade." The knife, designed by Mike Skellern, is one of the most popular series in the Böker lineup because " it is unobtrusive and more than sufficient for most everyday tasks ." Guido Ballardini also recalls a particularly interesting anecdote about the Exskelibur II: " A customer lost the knife and, after a long time, found it completely destroyed on a country lane. However, the blade was still in very good condition. I refurbished the blade, and it eventually found its way into the replacement knife that had been purchased in the meantime ."
Ballardini Steelware & Grinding has recently established itself as another landmark in Saarland. For here too, the saying holds true: " What the Saar Loop is to the 'Clœf' (a local nickname for a knife enthusiast), the Saar grinder is to the knife lover. "
