Firmenportrait | Viper

Biblical myth, awe-inspiring fascination, and majestic beauty: few animals possess such a magical ambivalence as the snake. Elegant in movement and highly efficient in hunting – venomous snakes, in particular, have been both admired and feared since time immemorial. On the European continent, the viper family (Viperidae) is the most common. Well-known representatives include the common European adder (Vipera berus) and Vipera novaculae. The latter genus was only discovered and thoroughly researched towards the end of the 1980s in the epicenter of the Italian knife industry, the small town of Maniago in Friuli, by Giovanni Miniutti, Renato Varnerin, and Milvio Rosa Gastaldo.

The morphological characteristics of the Vipera novaculae (literally "knife-like viper") include a razor-sharp blade that dispatches its prey with a toxicity of typically 57 HRC Rockwell or higher, and an elegant handle made of exquisite materials such as titanium, carbon fiber, precious wood, or horn. The entire body is characterized by a sleek shape and sometimes elaborate texture. Viper knives are often found in trouser pockets, belts, or display cases. The venom is often a neurotoxin that paralyzes reason in the reward center of avid knife collectors, leading to a depletion of their bank balance. Well-known subspecies include the diverse models Berus, Hug, Turn, and Katla.

Viper combines the best of handcraftsmanship with modern industrial manufacturing processes, so that its knives have always stood for uncompromising quality, innovative designs, and exceptional material combinations. The three founders remain true to their principles to this day, equipping their knives with contemporary mechanisms and high-quality steels without forgetting their roots. This is particularly noteworthy because, since the founding of the metalworking company Technocut SNC in 1987, high-quality knives have been sold under the Viper brand. Expertise in steel, especially in Damascus steel, coupled with a contemporary approach, has earned the manufacturer numerous awards, so that Technocut is now even considered a sought-after contract manufacturer for other established knife brands, without appearing under their own name. The Viper range primarily includes modern pocket knives, fixed-blade knives, and, more recently, kitchen knives. Already a classic of a rather exotic character is the "Mathusalem" champagne saber. Renowned designers such as Jesper Voxnaes, Rick Hinderer or Tommaso Rumici have already been recruited for several projects, making Viper knives highly sought-after items that are fortunately not on the red list of endangered species.

An antiserum for the mesmerizing knives from Maniago has not yet been found, but who could resist such a temptation made of steel?
