Located in the southern Peloponnese, the city-state of Sparta possessed one of the most powerful and influential armies of ancient Greece. The spearhead of the army was the Spartans, who set standards in both physical and strategic military training. Spear, shield, armor, helmet, and, not least, the favor of the gods were part of the basic equipment of the foot soldiers, while bladed weapons such as the sword held particular significance.
A previously hidden phalanx of Spartans with a deep affinity for blades was discovered in the early 21st century as an enclave in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Spartan Blades, LLC was founded in 2008 by Curtis V. Iovito and Mark Carey. The founders are every bit as distinguished as their historical counterparts: extensive military experience with highly decorated ranks, a profound understanding of weapons, strategic thinking, and a commitment to dedicating their passion to one thing: crafting unique knives. Under the umbrella of Pineland Cutlery, Inc., Spartan Blades merged in 2019 with the renowned manufacturer KA-BAR Knives, whose roots date back to World War II. This strategic partnership combines Spartan Blades' expertise in custom, high-performance knives with KA-BAR's manufacturing capabilities and brand recognition to expand product lines and increase market reach.
The selected range includes high-quality folding knives, indestructible fixed-blade knives, and practical tools, which the manufacturer categorizes into three basic lines:
- Elite Grade (Gold) : in-house production in North Carolina by gifted US knifemakers using the best materials in small series, special editions and custom orders.
- Pro Grade (Silver) : Designed and manufactured in the USA. High-quality materials and expert know-how for the discerning knife enthusiast.
- Field Grade (Bronze) : Developed by experts and manufactured with global partners. High-quality knives for the budget-conscious customer.
Although the brand is relatively young, its quality, design, and innovation speak for themselves. Spartan Blades is a perennial winner at the annual Blade Show, the leading trade fair for knives, and has already garnered numerous awards, most recently for the Clandestina as Knife of the Year 2024.
