Emmanuel Renaud, the face behind the renowned "Mister Kutter" barbershops in the Loire Valley, France, began his career as a professional men's hairdresser in 1991. Today, he owns four barbershops with 16 employees and is about to open the "Kutter School Academy." We take a fascinating look behind the scenes.
Hi Emmanuel, Mister Kutter has become a real heavyweight in the French barber scene. How did you come up with the idea of opening your own barbershop?
As a long-time manager of mixed-gender salons, I was primarily responsible for male clients. My customers were becoming increasingly demanding, and the desire and need to create a salon exclusively for men was palpable. My idea was to find a unique style dedicated solely to men. In 2014, I opened my first barbershop in Blois.
What can your customers expect when they enter a Mister Kutter Barbershop?
Our customers expect and find a genuine moment of relaxation, pampering, and expert advice. The human element is essential to us, and our service isn't a quick fix. We take the time to do things well. I've established a specific style for our shops, which I would call "Neo Retro"—a skillful blend of tradition and innovation!
Are women banned from some barbershops? Are women allowed to enter your shop?
They are tolerated, but have no right to speak. No, seriously: men are good to each other, and women don't really have a place here. However, if they bring humor, talent, and character, they are welcome as spectators.
Do you shave your customers with forged straight razors or exclusively with replaceable blade holders?
We usually work with both, depending on the need.
You've always been a fan of our razors . What convinced you?
The excellent workmanship, the quality of the materials, the handling, and the perfect aesthetics!
Besides your diverse business, do you have time for other things? If you do have time, what is important to you and what do you enjoy?
On a professional level, in addition to my barbershops, I've developed a high-quality men's grooming line specializing in beards. In my free time, I love motorcycling, especially with friends. And music!
Thank you for the interview and the great collaboration!
